Trekking in the Southern Shan State

Kalaw is the best starting point in the Southern Shan State for trekking to many different tribes including: Pa-O, Palaung, Danu, Taungyo, Kayah, Taungthu and Danaw, which inhabit the surrounding mountains. In the villages you will be able to observe traditional houses, weaving and the making of traditional costumes.

There are options for hikes from half a day up to five days.
Half-day tours give you the chance to visit one village/tribe while one-day tours give you already the possibility to visit up to three different villages/tribes.

A hike from Kalaw to Pindaya takes 2 days / 1 night. From Kalaw to Indaing at Inle Lake you would need 3 days/2 nights.

The nights will be spend in one of the villages. We will provide sleeping mats, sheets and mosquito nets, as well as all meals over the entire hike.

Pindaya is a good starting point for visits to the villages in the foothills of Yasagyi Mountain. These villages are more authentic, and you are more likely to see villagers in their traditional clothes.

It is possible to trek to Yasagyi village and return to Pindaya within one day, but we recommend staying overnight in the village of Yasagyi (Palaung tribe) before returning to Pindaya. Alternatively you can hike up to the pagoda on the summit of Yasagyi Mountain and stay a 2nd night at the village.

Another option is the trek from Nant Pan/Inle Lake to Kakku. We need to hike 6 hours up the mountain range east of Inle Lake to a Pa-O tribe village and proceed by 4W-drive vehicle for another ¾ hour to the site of Kakku, from where we will return via Taunggyi to Inle Lake.

We are happy to provide you with more maps to give you a better idea of the different areas by request.
