Pyin U Lwin ::
Formerly a British hill station, located in the Shan hills east of Mandalay at 1070 m above sea level. It features many examples of colonial architecture, transport in traditional stagecoaches and a beautiful botanical garden. It is also called the "city of flowers" as flowers bloom here all the year around, and its forested country lanes provide a welcome respite from the heat of the plains.
You will be either picked up at Mandalay International Airport or from your hotel in Mandalay in the morning and driven around 2 hours to Pyin U Lwin.
Enroute to the old colonial town, we will show you some interesting places to visit.
At Pyin U Lwin you will check into the hotel if you are staying over night, or proceed directly to Peik Chin Myaing and U Nang Gu before being brought back to the town to see the sights in Pyin U Lwin. If you did decide not to stay overnight in Pyin U Lwin ,we will drive back later in the afternoon to your designated hotel in Mandalay.
Sights on the way :
-Shwesayan Paya, near Tonbo
An ancient pagoda dating back to 1054, built by the Shan princess Saw Mon Hla, daughter of Sawbwa (Shan chieftain) of Maingmaw, the wife of Anawratha (a bagan king). She was expelled from court for alleged witchcraft. The interior has some interesting frescos. (1h)
-Anisakan Falls, 8km before Pyin U Lwin, 45 min. hike through a river gorge. A nice waterfall with 5 sections, the 3rd being particularly impressive. (3hrs)

-Naung Kan Gyi Paya, nice view from the hilltop overlooking the town. (1/2h)
-Colonial town center surrounding the Purcell Tower, a clock tower given to the town by Queen Victoria, (she offered an identical tower to Capetown in South Africa). (1/2h)
-Church of the Immaculate Conception, 100-year-old brick church with belltower and cruciform floorplan. The simple exterior belies the beauty of its interior. (1/2h)
-Chinese Temple, colorful temple built by Yunnanese immigrants. (1/2h)
-Candacraig hotel, beautiful and atmospheric colonial relic in peaceful grounds, previously the "chummery", or bachelor quarters, for employees of the Bombay Burmah Trading Company. (1/2h)
Sights around Pyin U Lwin :
-Peik Chin Myaing, a large Hindu-Buddhist shrine cave developed by local Nepalese. A 600m path leads inside the cave, which is decorated with relatively modern Buddha images and models of Myanmar's most famous payas like the Shwedagon Pagoda or Kyaikto, the Golden Rock. (2hrs)
-U Naung Gu, a small cave with Buddha image and stupa just across the river from Yangum Monastery. Monks use it for meditation. (1h)
