MYANMAR CUISINE – at old and new locations in Yangon

There are only a few restaurants in Yangon, which serve excellent Myanmar cuisine in a high end atmosphere that is optimal for tourist who are seeking the Burmese taste on their first trip to the Golden Land.

Just recently the award winning Sandy’s Myanmar Cuisine has moved to the colonial building of the Kandawgyi Palace Hotel. The restaurant has been decorated with local and ethnic flavor. At the new location it offers an outside seating area that overlooks the Kandawgyi Lake with its rejuvenated Kandawgyi Garden and the Karaweik. And of course Sandy is still preparing the food herself as always.

Another restaurant being at its place for a while has seen a change in management a while ago and is now promoting its Myanmar Cuisine. The Padomar on Inya Road was formerly mostly known as Thai food restaurant in Yangon and is now also serving excellent Burmese food next to the Thai cuisine. Myanmar tempura and steamed fish curry can be enjoyed here at excellent quality. The nice décor inside with a light colonial touch makes a dinner for two a romantic occasion but also sets a perfect place for a large dinner feast of friends. Outside dining in the garden of the building from 1920 is possible all year around. On rainy days a newly build roof in the garden provides shelter.

And of course we should not forget a third great lunch or dinner place with Myanmar Cuisine, the famous Green Elephant Restaurant. This open restaurant over two floors features a nice traditional setting with beautiful artifacts. Its location close to Pyay Road is a bit further from the downtown region and the Kitchen closes sooner at night then at the Padomar with its attached bar (including a billiard table), but it serves also excellent traditional curries and other exquisite items of the Myanmar Cuisine. Sometimes the Green Elephant is a bit overcrowded since it is well known to tourists and is often used by travel agencies for their groups.
