  NORTHERN SHAN STATE
6 days / 5 nights

1st day: Yangon - Mandalay
After a morning flight from Yangon to Mandalay, the last capital of the Burmese kingdom and Myanmar’s second largest city, we will visit different sights, such as the famous Mahamuni Pagoda, Shwe Inbin Monastery with its old and exquisite woodcarvings; Shwe Nandaw Kyaung (the Golden Palace Monastery); and Kuthodaw Pagoda, “the world’s biggest book”. Mandalay is the country’s cultural heartland and an important trade center, so you will have a full day of visits to marble carving and candle workshops and sweet makers, as well as bronze foundries and Gold-leaf workshops. For sunset we will mount Mandalay Hill to enjoy the view across the Irrawaddy River.

1 nights stay in Mandalay.

2nd day: Mandalay – HSIPAW - Lashio
We will start early in the morning from Mandalay and drive throughout the day by car via Hsipaw to Lashio. On the way we will be able to see the famous Gokteik Viaduct, the second highest railway bridge in the world as well as the Bawgyo Pagoda, a typically Shan-style Paya from the 14th century, which is close to Hsipaw. Hsipaw itself was once the centre of a small Shan state of its own, and there you can visit the old Shan Palace and Mahamyatmuni Paya. On the road to Lashio there are several Shan villages which may be of interest.

2 nights stay in Lashio.

3rd day: Lashio
Lashio with over 500,000 inhabitants, most of them Chinese and Shan, is the biggest city in the Northern Shan State, located at the southern end of the infamous Burma Road. There are many places to visit, such as the Man-Su Pagoda, which is said to be over 250 years old and the even-more-impressive 2500 year old Saasana (Pyi Lon Chanta) Paya. The central market is particularly interesting in the morning, and you will be able to observe ethnic groups. There is also a Hot Springs on the road to Mu-Se which is well worth a visit.

4th day: Lashio – PYIN U LWIN
In the morning we return to Pyin U Lwin, formerly a British hill station, located in the Shan hills east of Mandalay at 1070 m above sea level. It features many examples of colonial architecture, transport in traditional stagecoaches and a beautiful botanical garden. It is also called the "city of flowers" as flowers bloom here all the year around, and its forested country lanes provide a welcome respite from the heat of the plains.

2 nights stay in Pyin U Lwin.

5th day: PYIN U LWIN
We will be able to visit Peik Chin Myaing, a large Hindu-Buddhist shrine cave developed by local Nepalese, or U Naung Gu, a small cave with a Buddha image and stupa just across the river from Yangum Monastery. Of special interest is he colonial town center surrounding the Purcell Tower, a clock tower given to the town by Queen Victoria; the Church of the Immaculate Conception, a 100-year-old brick church with a bell tower and cruciform floor plan or the colorful Chinese Temple, built by Yunnanese immigrants. A stroll through the Botanical Garden is a must on every visit to Pyin U Lwin.

6th day: PYIN U LWIN - Yangon
You will leave Pyin U Lwin early in the morning to drive 2 ½ hrs to Mandalay Airport for your flight back to Yangon.
