The dramatic snow capped mountains that separate Myanmar's Kachin state from Arunachal Pradesh in India are the most accessible to Putao. The trek to Mt Phonekanrazi climbs from the frontier village of Upper Sangaung over a pass into the sub tropical Nam Lang river valley. From here we trek along hunting trails through pristine old growth forest and isolated Rawang settlements to the base of Mt. Phonekanrazi. The climb from base camp, weather permitting, to the snowcapped summit provides a long days trek but the views west to India and east to the Putao valley in Myanmar are truly spectacular. The combination of tribal villages, dense subtropical forest and snow capped mountains makes this one of the most picturesque of treks.
On the return leg we take an alternative route through Wanglai Dam then up over a less used pass to Upper Sangaung. If you want to combine this classic mountain trek with rafting there is an option of rafting the spectacular Nam Lang River on the last two days directly back to "The Lisu". This is one of the best combined trekking and rafting trips to be offered anywhere.
